Where does the money come from?
The Watchtower organization is in fact primarily a publishing Corporation, they print millions and millions of magazines, Bibles, books and assorted publications that in turn is distributed to Congregations all over the world. Although the main printing facility is in Brooklyn Heights, and upstate NY. Printing facilities have also been set up in many other foreign countries, so they can print in the language of the land and not have to be shipped from the USA. Here is where the genius of this Org. lies. There are literally thousand of man and woman that work at the Headquarters for a small monthly allowance. Some work at the printing presses, some work in shipping, some work in the cafeteria, as a server or cook, or housecleaning. They all have been assigned a job when they initially report for work there. When I lived in Brooklyn in the 50’s and 60’s and attended a local congregation there, we were told that they received a monthly allowance of $14.00 a month. I am sure that the monthly allowance has gone up substantially since then, but if they had to hire individuals and pay prevailing wages it would definitely impact their bottom line. These individuals were definitely overworked and underpaid. It was not unusual for members of the congregation they were assigned to, to help them financially, or at times take them home for a good home cooked meal, what they received from the Watchtower, living in NY did not go too far. Many also were assigned to work at the farm. They worked the fields or tended the cows or worked on tractors. Annette and I visited Watchtower farms several times when we lived in NY. And volunteered our time when we vacationed upstate. Man and women who volunteered to work at Watchtower Headquarters usually signed up to work there for 2 years. So, let’s go back to my original question, where does all this money come from? I comes primarily from not having to pay the workers prevailing wages and it comes also from the distribution of the printed material, let me explain, so we have all of this literature, how does it get distributed? This is the way it works, each Publisher (this is how they address themselves) in the local K.H. tells the Literature servant how many magazines they want each month, in turn that Ministerial servant totals up all the requests and send the order to the Watchtower Headquarters letting them know the number of magazines or books or pamphlet they have ordered for each publisher. So each month the local K.H. receives these publications by trucks owned by the Watchtower and driven by volunteer driver. Now once the magazines have been received, it is the responsibility of each publisher to pick them up at the counter, and pay for them, the members have been told what the value of the publication is, what it takes to print them. In turn when the publisher goes from door to door and someone agrees to take the magazines, they will ask if they would like to contribute to the World Wide Work of J’sW. They are not allowed to ask for a specific amount. When someone gives them money, if the amount given is over and above what the estimated value of the magazines or books is, that amount is turned back to the K.H. as an additional donation. Do you now see how the Watchtower is one of the richest publishing companies in the world? They cannot possibly loose with thousands of people working for peanuts, and millions of people from the local K.H. distributing them. All that cash goes back to the Organization tax free.
